Education Leeds' update for Leeds schools newsletter

Comenius Regio project update

During half term I went to Malaga with Barbara Harper (Leeds Met) & Natalie Sadler (Otley Prince Henry’s Grammar School, Art teacher) for our initial planning meeting for the 2 year project. The overall aims of the project are to develop the teaching of Spanish (and English, for the Malaga schools) in all the partner institutions. There will be a particular focus on Art and PE in developing cross-curricular approaches to language learning. The Picasso museum in Malaga is one of the partners in the project; during the 3 day visit we were shown around the museum and began discussions on how we can include our work in their educational programmes, and how they can support the project.

We visited a primary school (CEIP Virgen de la Cabeza) in the tiny village of Canillas and were shown around by Headteacher Pepe Montilla Rodriguez. The school is part of the bi-lingual programme in Malaga and aims in the next 2-3 years to deliver 50% of its curriculum in English, hence its interest in the project.

Later we visited a High School in Nerja (IES Sierra Almijara) who are also a partner in the project. Natalie was able to work alongside Antonio Magan Oriega (Art teacher) and begin to develop their collaborative ideas which they will develop throughout the project.

During the week of 8th – 11th March 2010 Malaga are holding a School Partnership event and are looking for 6 Leeds primary schools to link up with 6 primary schools from Malaga. Please contact me on Julie.a.burgess@educationleeds.co.uk as soon as possible if you think your school would be interested. I cannot stress how beautiful a region Andalucia is….they are extremely keen to link with the UK. There would be a wealth of opportunities for pupil interactions, even teacher or pupil visits and exchanges.

During the week 7-11th June 2010 there will be 6 teachers and 4 University students from Malaga coming to Leeds to work shadow and possibly deliver some lessons in our schools . Again please do contact me if your school may be interested in hosting a teacher / student.
